Statement: I have been working for a few years now altering images (photgraphs) by removing the central figures and placing them on new backgrounds. I am interested in how much of the original composition stays with the central figure and how much is transformed by the new surrounding. In the piece with wings added to the child, the work is literally about transformation, specifically how our lives are altered by the journey from childhood to adulthood. The map piece is one of a series that relates to my childhood spent travelling back and forth across Western Canada. The image of the child on the trike appears to resonate with many other people who have also travelled that route . By placing the image on a map, I am encouraging the viewer to write their own story for the piece.
